Why should every parent have a living will? Why is it that most parents I know in my community DO NOT?

kmcverry

A living will, also known as an advance directive, is a legal document that outlines a person's wishes for medical treatment and end-of-life care in case they become unable to communicate their preferences due to a serious illness or injury.

Having a living will can provide peace of mind for both the person creating the document and their loved ones.

Here are some reasons why someone may choose to have a living will:

1.    Control over medical treatment: A living will allows individuals to specify their preferences for medical treatment, such as whether they want life-sustaining treatments like artificial respiration or feeding tubes, and under what circumstances they would want such treatments to be administered.

2.    Ensures wishes are respected: By clearly outlining their wishes in a living will, individuals can ensure that their medical treatment aligns with their values and beliefs. This can help alleviate stress and confusion for family members who may have to make decisions on their behalf.

3.    Eases decision-making for loved ones: A living will can provide clear guidance to family members who may be tasked with making difficult medical decisions on behalf of a loved one. This can help avoid conflicts and ensure that decisions are made in accordance with the person's wishes.

4.    Avoids unnecessary medical intervention: If a person does not want to be kept alive through artificial means, a living will can help avoid unnecessary medical intervention that may prolong suffering and may be expensive.

Overall, having a living will can help ensure that a person's wishes for medical treatment and end-of-life care are respected and can provide clarity and peace of mind for both the individual and their loved ones.
